Toolqit vs Thread: comparing AI service desks for MSPs

Short answer: Thread calls itself an AI service desk. In practice it triages tickets and brings them into one place, through chat, an inbox and voice. Toolqit already does that, and it is built for the entire technician experience: AI-native routing and dispatch, every tool in the stack on one ticket, workflows that take a ticket from intake to close, and time and documentation written on resolve. Thread works as a point solution at the front of the desk. Toolqit is the place where the work gets done.

What does Thread do?

As of October 2026, Thread describes itself as an AI service desk built for MSPs. Its product includes an Inbox for techs, a Messenger chat app for end users, Magic Agents that triage and follow up on tickets, an in-inbox assistant, Voice AI for inbound and outbound calls (generally available since January 2026), and analytics. Thread integrates with the major PSAs and has raised growth funding led by Susquehanna. It is a serious product, and its focus on the end user’s experience shows.

What does Toolqit do?

Toolqit is the place techs and operators work. Tickets come in from email, the portal, phone (Toolqit Phone, Zoom Phone, Intermedia, Aircall), Teams and Slack, and land triaged from your own ticket history. Toolqit checks every connected service (RMM, documentation, Microsoft 365, security tools) and puts the likely fix on the ticket. Previously seen tickets run through a workflow, and anything that changes a client environment waits on a tech’s one-click sign-off.

The tech never leaves the ticket. Remote sessions, Huntress incidents, ThreatLocker approvals, Pax8 licenses and IT Glue or Hudu docs are all one click away. On resolve, the time entry and documentation are written and synced back to the PSA. Operators get margin by client, technician and ticket on the same screen, and techs get the full help desk in the Toolqit mobile app for on-site work.

How is Toolqit’s routing different?

Most routing in the MSP market sorts a ticket by category and priority and sends it to a queue. Toolqit’s routing and dispatch are AI-native. Toolqit reads the ticket and looks at the work patterns of every technician: who has solved tickets like this one before, who knows this client best, whose skills fit, and who has capacity right now. It routes each ticket to the person best placed to solve it, and your own routing rules still come first.

Which one should I choose?

Triage and intake are a few minutes of every ticket. The hours come after the ticket lands: techs bouncing between seven tabs, fixes living in one senior tech’s head, time entries guessed at the end of the day. In our experience buying and running MSPs, that is where most of the margin goes, and it is the work Toolqit was built around. Toolqit covers intake and triage across email, phone, chat and the portal as well, so you get the front of the desk and everything behind it in one product.

Can I run Thread and Toolqit together?

It has been done, since both write to your PSA and Toolqit syncs two ways with it. Typically MSPs choose one. Toolqit is the place of work and already does the intake, triage and dispatch tasks, so most MSPs would rather not pay for a separate point solution on top. Either way, your PSA stays the system of record.

FAQ

Is Toolqit an AI service desk like Thread?

Toolqit does everything an AI service desk does (intake, triage, aggregation) and covers the rest of the technician’s work too: AI-native dispatch, resolution, workflows, documentation and time.

How does Toolqit route tickets?

By who is best placed to solve it, using each tech’s track record on similar tickets, their history with the client, their skills and their current workload.

Does Toolqit have end user chat?

Yes. Tickets come in from Microsoft Teams and Slack, plus email, phone, the portal and a web widget.

Does Toolqit take actions without a technician?

Toolqit triages, researches, drafts and documents on its own. Anything that changes a client environment waits on a technician’s sign-off, and every action lands in an audit trail.

Which is faster to set up?

Toolqit onboarding takes 30 to 45 minutes and connects 30+ tools in about 30 minutes. Techs are working in it the same week.
